Tooth decay is a major problem impacting the dental health of 92 percent of the adult population between the ages of 20 and 64. Out of that group, an estimated 23 percent of those people do not receive treatment. Most of these people do not seek dental help due to financial restrictions. Tooth decay afflicts white, well-educated people with high incomes more often than other demographic groups.

The risk of developing cavities is increased by certain conditions. While it is impossible to completely eliminate the possibility of getting a cavity, knowing the causes can help people guard against increased risks whenever possible. Below are the five main causes of tooth decay.

1. Certain Foods

Certain foods prone to sticking to the teeth are common culprits that cause tooth decay. These sticky foods are not easily removed with saliva, which makes them particularly problematic. Consumables that fall into this category are soda, cereal, raisins, sugar, candy, pastries, chips, ice cream and dried fruit.

2. Dry Mouth

People who have a dry mouth with a lack of saliva to wash away food particles and plague are at a greater risk for having cavities. Certain medications cause this problem, promoting the growth of bacteria, which creates decay. Chemotherapy is a particular concern as a major contributor to dry mouth.

3. Stomach Acid

Stomach acid promotes tooth decay by damaging tooth enamel. The two main sources of stomach acid that impacts dental health is from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and bulimia. GERD, or heartburn is a common problem with a large percentage of people that suffer from it daily. A second group of people with bulimia vomit after meals, regularly bathing their teeth in acid via the process. In both cases, acid destroys enamel, promoting tooth decay.

4. Lack of Hygiene

A lack of proper dental hygiene is a major cause of cavities and elicits stern warnings from any devoted Tooth Doctor. Teeth should be brushed in the morning and before bedtime to remove the bacteria that causes tooth decay. Flossing once a day is recommended to remove particles of food at the gum level that cannot be reached by a toothbrush.

That’s why a power that ignores some important vitamins and trace elements such as magnesium, is a diet that does not go wrong to strengthen the hair and get the result exactly opposite.

What are some of the best wines to have at a tasting event? When choosing the right wines, you need to think about combining a progression of different types of wine, which can complement each other and go well with light appetisers; the main issue to focus on is not overwhelming your guests’ tastes too soon, but also to ensure that they have some distinctive vintages to try. The wine order for a tasting should ideally run from sparkling whites to whites, reds, and then sweet wine, as this will help awaken the palette. With this in mind, some of the top wines to have at a successful tasting event include.

Prosecco

An always reliable introductory wine, Prosecco is a good alternative to Champagne if you want to save some money; this sparkling wine is particularly popular during the Summer, and is most often sourced from Italy, where it originates. Prosecco has an acidic, apple-like taste, and has some notable vintages and terroir locations, which include Valdobbiadene Prosecco Spumante, and Prosecco Zardetto NV.

Sauvignon Blanc

One of the best selling drinks in the UK, Sauvignon Blanc is an ideal white wine to have with food during a tasting. Chilean Sauvignon Blanc is particularly strong at the moment, while it’s worth trying vintages from New Zealand wineries. Sauvignon Blanc traditionally has a herbal and grassy taste, and can have characteristics of passion fruit. Some good current vintages include New Zealand’s Clos Henri, and wines from the South African Steenberg vineyards.Pinot Noir

This wine represents a good choice of red for a tasting, and is distinguished by the wide varieties of vintages that can be sourced from the Burgundy and the Champagne regions of France. German and Italian Pinot Noirs can also be good, though, as can those grown in California, Australia, and Chile. Particular vintages that are recommended in terms of value included the 2004 Casa Marin Lo Abarca Hills from Chile, as well as Pinot Noirs from the French commune of Santenay.

Cannonau di Sardegna

Made from the Granacha grape, this Sardinian red wine is relatively under-rated, and has only been a common sight since the 1970s. Quite similar to Muscat, Cannonau is derived from the Granacha grape, and typically has an alcohol content of 13 per cent, so be careful when tasting. Fortified versions are also available, with most Cannonau di Sardegna reds coming in vintages that are at least two years old.

Madeira

In terms of selecting the right dessert wine, Madeira is another reliable option. This Portuguese sweet wine uses Malvasia, Bual, Verdelho, Sercial, and Terrantez grapes and includes a large amount of oxidisation in its fermentation stage – an unusual strategy for a wine. The flavours produced by Madeira includes coffee and caramel, while the wine has high levels of acidity. Try to find a vintage of at least five years.

Passito

A raisin wine that’s air dried, Passito is another excellent dessert option for rounding off your wine tasting event; not as common as Madeira, this white dessert wine has a bouquet that includes traces of vanilla, as well as hazelnut and dried grapes. Usually served at room temperature, a good Passito variant is the Ipsus Passito di Pantelleria Moscato.

While you want them to enjoy their vacation, you also want to make sure that they are eating healthy, nutritious foods. Healthy summer snacks can be fun for children to eat while getting nutrition into their growing bodies.

Take Advantage of Summer Fruit

Children love most types of fruit. Luckily, summer is a great time to purchase fresh produce that is affordable and tasty. For example, watermelon is low in calories and is refreshing on hot summer days. To make this snack more interesting and fun for children, cut watermelon into fun shapes with cookie cutters or layer watermelon with other fruits on a skewer to make a fruit kabob.

Frozen Treats

Rather than purchase store bought popsicles that are loaded with sugar and artificial products, consider making your own frozen pops. You can customize your creations based on your children’s food preferences. Consider blending frozen fruit chunks with juice, or mix drained, canned fruit with vanilla yogurt. Whether you pour your creations into a Popsicle mold or paper cups, your children will devour this tasty summer treat.

Dip Those Vegetables

Another healthy summer snack for children is fresh vegetables and dip. While vegetables may not automatically be on the top of children’s snack wish list, there are ways to make this healthy food appetizing and fun for children. Experiment with a variety of vegetables cut into easy to hold shapes, and different dips for the vegetables. Even if you think your children may not like the new flavors, you may be surprised to find out the new flavors they like. In addition to the health benefits of vegetables, raw vegetables are good for teeth health. When you feed your children this healthy snack, your family dentist in Baton Rouge will praise the condition of your children’s teeth and your purse will be happy.

Portable Snacks

In the summer, children are on the go. They may be swimming, playing outdoors, or biking around the neighborhood. This activity level increases their appetites, and it is important to feed them protein-filled snacks that they can eat on the run. Portable snacks, such as string cheese, are a great choice to provide fuel for your children’s body.

Regardless if you choose to focus on fruit, vegetables, protein or frozen treats, your child will think you are spoiling them with delicious snacks this summer when you follow these summer snack guidelines.

Girls are always looking for a fun day out on the town with their friends. Many ladies are choosing to partake in cocktails and cupcakes parties. There are several reasons why this type of event is becoming a big trend in the social scene.

Something Different

Cocktails and cupcakes events offer an alternative to traditional girl’s night out or other social outings. This is beneficial to those who are looking for something different and are tired of the same types of outings that they are used to going to. Numerous places are hosting these events in different cities with new ones popping up almost daily. Some women are even taking it upon themselves to host these events at their favorite social spot. Many businesses are more than willing to host a cocktails and cupcakes party if it means bringing in more business. These types of event are becoming a huge trend just because they are so different than the other activities that have been trendy in the social scene in the past.

Combines Two Things Most Women Like

Most ladies enjoy both cocktails and cupcakes. By combining these two items as the main theme of an event, it is sure to be a hit. One of the beneficial aspects about having a cocktails and cupcakes theme event is that there are many different types of cocktails and cupcakes to choose from. There are even non-alcoholic cocktails and sugar free cupcakes available to those guests who are watching what they eat or drink. By offering a variety of these two items at an event, it will ensure that everyone can participate and will surely be a hit with any crowd. The cocktails and cupcakes can also be easily customized into a certain color scheme if the event is part of another occasion such as a bachelorette party or a baby shower.

Generally Inexpensive

A cocktails and cupcakes event is generally inexpensive to attend as compared to other day out on the town activities. With many people struggling today, but still needing some social interaction with their friends, this kind of activity may be just the answer that they are looking for. In many cases, having just one cocktail and cupcake may be sufficient enough to satisfy an appetite and will cost a lot less than a traditional night out on the town or day of pampering at the spa. Since cocktails and cupcakes events are so cost effective, many ladies are choosing this type of activity to be the new girl’s day out on the town.

In conclusion, cocktails and cupcakes are becoming the new “in” thing when it comes to a girl’s day out. There are quite a few reasons why they are becoming so popular. If you are trying to figure out a fun girl’s outing, consider incorporating cocktails and cupcakes into it. It will prove to be a great choice that both you and your friends will love.

With 2013 speeding past and new culinary venutres springing up all across the UK, we are in a pretty good place to have a fair idea of what British foodies will be consuming throughout the rest of the year. Let’s take a look at some of the clear trends:

Chicken on the rise

Chicken dinners have long been a quick and affordable form of food, often eaten in lieu of something more expensive and time-consuming. Chicken-only restaurants have been on the rise lately, however, and through 2013 we look set to see a range of surprising new chicken dishes.

This is part of a series of changes in the poultry world, from birds which are raised with more care, to exciting new ways of preparing their meat. Spicy chicken recipes which have been around in America for some time will now be reaching the United Kingdom. London has already seen a rise in chicken focused establishments in the same vein as popular gourmet burger restaurants.

Adventurous vegetables

Let’s face it: for generations, far too many people in Britain have treated vegetables as a mere back-up feature to meat and pastry. This is set to change, as fluctuations in food costs and a newfound interest in healthy eating will put some most unusual vegetables on the map.

Flavour is the key here, so everyday vegetables with a strong taste – the Brussels sprout, for example – will come into their own. Joining them will be more exotic ingredients such as the horseradish, which is currently a trend in and of itself: many eateries have recently discovered the wide range of sauces and garnish which can be made from it.

Ramen

Ramen is another convenience food favourite, appreciated by takeaway-goers for years, which will reach a new audience of foodies as it becomes a major culinary trend of 2013. At its heart ramen is, after all, a simple dish of noodle soup; there is plenty of room for innovation and experimentation. How about some Mexican-infused ramen to spice things up? If you prefer something more authentically Eastern, there is always the Japanese-run Shoryu restaurant in London. Noodle shops represent the best of both worlds – truely fast food but healthy meal options.

Popcorn: not just for cinemas anymore

We have always taken popcorn for granted as something to much on while absorbed in a Hollywood blockbuster. Throughout 2013, however, it looks as though popcorn will be given a cultural re-evaluation and emerge as something far more versatile than most people had previously imagined.

Popcorn has long been available in both sweet and salty varieties, and this is perhaps a key to its success: it can be used in everything from ice cream to savoury cheese dishes. There are even some great recipes for herbal popcorn out there, and Texture, a restaurant in London, serves bacon-flavoured popcorn.

An added benefit is that, as a wholegrain, popcorn lends itself to health food.

Alcohol in desserts

Alcohol and sweet foods go together brilliantly: just look at the longstanding popularity of brandy butter, chocolate liqueurs and countless other foodstuffs. In 2013, it looks as though the floodgates will open as whiskeys, beers and cocktails are poured into cakes and puddings across the country.

Just think of the possibilities: Guinness in cupcakes, spirits in marshmallows, even beer-flavoured jelly. If evidence were needed that sweeties aren’t just for the kids anymore, this is it. Alchohol infused desserts have already seen their way into a variety of London’s top venues – from michelin starred restaurants to 5 star luxury hotel kitchens.

Conclusion

Predicting nationwide food trends is an almost impossible job, but real change in the wind can usually be detected. Even if the trends above turn out to be flashes in the pan, they will likely influence our nation’s approach to food in one way or another. Who knows what 2014 will bring…?

Barbequing is popular pretty much everywhere in the world, however in Australia the barbeque is a sacred thing; almost as sacred as the Queens tea parties for the elite.
So, if you are interested in hosting a barbeque, of course not just any old barbeque, but an authentic Aussie backyard friendly cuisine that will impress all of your friends, what will you need? And (most importantly) what should you cook?
Well, here is what my research concluded for you Aussie barbeque fans out there.

Throw another shrimp on the barbie

Every meal has a starter and so to bring the authentic food of Australia to your summer celebrations of beer and food, why not try a Barbequed Shrimp with Lime Mayonnaise?
This wonderful starting dish is a great way to commence any Aus Barbie, it’s quick, simple and easy to prepare. The main part of this dish is the mayonnaise which is prepared by combining mayo with freshly grated mango, a splash of lime juice and a pinch of sea salt.
After the preparation just put it in a dish, then heat the barbeque which should be ready to cook after you finish skewering them and brushing them with canola oil then you can put another shrimp on the Barbie – yes, obvious but worth it!

Mains

After everyone has enjoyed your starter you can move onto the main meal, and there are a couple of popular dishes that Australians prefer to cook. The first is Lamb Sausage Baguettes which are as tasty as they sound and all you need is French bread, your own mixed salad and lamb sausages or, you could spring for something a little more exotic, the choice is yours.
Mix a fresh salad with mustard seeds, mixed lettuce greens and raisins with mango chutney, barbeque the sausage and place the salad in the baguette ready for the sausage to complete this wonderfully authentic Australian main.
However if you fancy something a little more impressive, if you have a “Sheila” to make an impact on, a fine second choice would be the Char-grilled Steak Sandwich. This dish is usually served with a fried egg, in the style of a large burger; other ingredients include lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and Spanish onions. It might be wise to beat the steak with a meat tenderiser to ensure that it cooks well, or well enough if you like your steak still “moo-ing”.

To Finish

And of course for snacking after you’ve taken a rest from those meaty meals, serve a delightful array of crisps, pretzels to ensure a lovely snacking dessert.
However, no Australian barbeque would be complete without a beer in hand and a “Sheila” in the other!
To have no beer at an Aus barbeque is as bad as turning up at a church nude, and if you want to go that one step further for authenticity why not learn some Australian barbeque slang?
Such as “BYO” which means “Bring your own”, which is to say bring your own beer and food etc; and you may wish to remember to stress the phrase “there’s enough room in the fridge” to your guests as it is common courtesy for guests to put their beer in the hosts fridge and leave what they don’t drink behind – a golden rule I feel.

So there you are, some golden tips for food you should cook, snacks you should provide and common courteous rules in Aus that should never be forgotten, or left out

Weber has long been considered the Rolls Royce of barbecues and grills and this reputation is well deserved. With its great range of products, you’re sure to find the Weber barbecue that suits your particular grilling needs. Weber has cemented its position as best-in-class by providing top quality products, whether you’re looking for a gas, smoke or charcoal grill. Webers are made of high-quality materials and as such are guaranteed to stand the test of time. The Weber Grill company also prides itself on staying abreast with the latest inventions in grilling, so you can expect impressive and handy accessories and innovations.

Gas Barbecues

Gas barbecues have become increasingly popular over the past few years due not only to the convenience they offer in terms of storage and cleaning, but also because they are considered to be less harsh on the environment when compared to charcoal or wood grills. The best Weber gas grill must be the Genesis Silver B Premium (LP) Grill. This is a lifetime investment and is suitable for all your barbecue needs. Its features three individually adjustable stainless steel burners, three tool holders, a drip pan, a warming rack and a fuel gage. The Genesis even has storage space for seasonings. It has all-terrain, weatherproof wheels so you can park your grill wherever you want, and it’s very easy to clean.

Weber Performer

The Weber Performer is considered to be the best charcoal grill on the market. Charcoal grills can cook food at higher temperatures than gas grills and also allow you to burn wood instead of charcoal. They might need slightly more maintenance than a gas Weber, but that distinctive charcoal flavour makes the Performer a very popular choice. It features a push button igniter, a large cooking area, a thermometer, a storage unit in the bottom section, weatherproof wheels and a “one-touch” cleaning system. It is housed in a heavy duty steel cart, and comes complete with a Weber Cookbook.

Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker Smoker 2820

When it comes to smoke grills, your best choice is the Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker Smoker 2820. This grill, like all Webers, will last for years. You don’t have to be a seasoned professional to enjoy the unique taste of smokey grilled dishes. The Smokey Mountain is easy to assemble and clean. You can move it around comfortably and it accommodates a surprisingly large amount of food. It has individually controlled vents, a rust-resistant fuel door and also comes with a Weber Cookbook and vinyl cover. You will also be pleasantly surprised by the fact that this is one of the cheapest Webers on the market.

Weber caters to your every grilling or barbequing need and as such offers a range of useful accessories for your grill of choice. Some popular examples are their brushes, basters and even talking thermometers. But for top bragging rights, the ultimate Weber accessory must be the electric rotisserie.

Charlie considers himself to be the ultimate Weber barbecue master and if it wasn’t for his wife who likes a homecooked meal in an oven, Charlie would definitely BBQ every single day, come rain or shine.

Birthdays are exciting times for families. It’s also a fun time to get creative with baking. There are many possibilities to express such creativity through a unique and special birthday cake. Cupcakes are all the rage right now, thanks to popular baking shows such as Cupcake Wars and cupcake bakeries popping up all over the country. So, why not follow the trend and put a new spin on the traditional birthday cake by making a cake designed out of cupcakes? Whether it’s for a child’s birthday or an adult’s, cupcakes will make for a delicious, sweet treat that everyone will enjoy.

Probably the best thing about cupcakes is the fact that you don’t have to settle on just one flavor when it comes to creating the perfect celebratory treat for that special person’s birthday party. You can create a variety of different flavors including popular options like chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, or anything else that you can come up with. Cupcakes make it possible for you to truly let your imagination run wild and create a birthday treat that is fun, easy, and that will definitely make everyone in attendance smile from ear to ear as they come back for seconds and probably even thirds.

Start Out With A Fun And Unique Theme

Kid’s birthdays have endless theme ideas, such as favorite characters like Mickey Mouse, Elmo or Dora the Explorer. Design a child’s cake with cupcakes in the shape of one of these fun-loving characters. A character cake design will require intermediate to advanced cake decorating skills. Be prepared with plenty of cake decorating tools and if possible, a “How-To” guide.

If a character cake is not something that interests the birthday boy or girl, a favorite hobby or sport may be a great alternative, such as a toy train, basketball or baby doll. This type of cake might be easier to make for a beginner because it is generic and allows for freedom with decoration. Adult birthday themes can be just as limitless. Going with a favorite sport or hobby is a great option for the cupcake design that would be simple to make. For example, a golf bag with golf balls for the avid golfer. For a milestone birthday such as a 40th or 50th, a simple and fun cupcake design in the number (40 or 50) to represent how old the person is turning.

The Necessary Tools For Perfect Decorating

Once the shape of the cake has been laid out on a large board or cake plate, the fun yet challenging part begins – decorating with icing and/or fondant. One doesn’t have to be a professional cake artist to create a fun and unique birthday cupcake design. With the right tools, such as a frosting spatula, piping bags (with the appropriate size tips,) and an assortment of food coloring, the cake will noticeably resemble the chosen theme/character and put a big smile on everyone’s face.

Fondant can be tricky to use. It requires a lot of manipulation to get to a perfect color and texture. When successfully used, fondant can make interesting decorations that add an extra special touch. For the beginner, taking a fondant class first might be a good idea. The most important thing is to have fun and get as creative as you want to!

Ever since pizza first arrived in the United States, it has been happily eaten by the whole nation. The U.S. has really made pizza its own, continuously reinventing it since it was first seen on our shores. If you were to take a pizza tour of America, it would take a lifetime to see all the varieties that people have come up with. The following are just a few of the regional specialties you are likely to encounter.

New York Style
When it comes to pizza, few varieties are more iconic than a thin crust New York style slice. While you might find some other thin crust varieties throughout the United States, the New York style slice is distinguished by its ability to be folded. This requires a crust that is thin enough, with just the right amount of thickness so that it holds itself together. This pizza features the standard blend of marinara sauce with mozzarella cheese.

Sicilian Style
The Sicilian style slice is the New York style’s larger cousin. Instead of the circular pie many have come to expect, Sicilian pie’s are square and the slices are cut that way as well. Sicilian style pizza is the exact opposite of the standard New York slice, being big and fluffy. While the crust may have a small crisp to it, it tends towards the softer side. This style is always a great choice when you are feeling especially hungry or are expecting a large gathering.

Chicago Deep Dish
The deep dish style pizza is an art unto its own. This pie is deep and thick like its name suggests, with its tall crust going up to the top of its namesake deep-dish pan. It is common to find this pizza in a stuffed variety, with cheese in the middle and another layer of crust on the top. You might expect to see this pizza variety served in a mini version for a single person.

Neapolitan
This form of pizza is not to be confused with your standard New York slice, which often goes by the same name. The Neapolitan pizza is perhaps the most traditional variety, something you are more likely to sit down at a restaurant and eat rather than grab and go. The pies are sized for one person, so don’t expect to be satisfied with a single slice. Many pizza fans will be surprised to see that compared to your average pizza this variety has a good deal less cheese and sauce. Part of this pizza’s distinct appeal is that they are commonly cooked in a stone oven over a wood fire, being done within two minutes. In addition, your pizza will have a slight bit of charring to it. If you are looking for a whole new pizza experience, Neapolitan is the way to go.

Chicago Thin Style
This is the style that many Midwestern pizzerias are known for. This variety is the complete opposite of the deep-dish pizza, sporting a thin and crispy crust that is almost cracker like. Unlike all of the other aforementioned pizzas, this one is cut into small squares, a style known as “party cut”.
